What I Am Listening To

What I Am Listening To: Issue 5 {Worship with a New Song}

Sweet friend,

Do you love music?  I am not a lover of music, but words are important to me.  A poet at heart, I adore the lyrics of a well written song.  I grew up on the hymns of the church.  Some of my favorites are Nothing But the Blood, I’ll Fly Away, Ring Out, How Great Thou Art, and Ten Thousand Angels. Those are the songs that come to mind when I think of home…my childhood.

There is something bittersweet about not hearing those songs in our contemporary worship services.  The songs of today, while not rooted in my church tradition, are still effective in drawing me into the heart of the Father. I find that there is something refreshing about singing and reflecting on the words of a new song.

“Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!” Psalm 96:1

So what am I listening to?

What I Am Listening To {Issue 4: Falling Deeper in Love with Jesus}

Friend,  the things that you listen to are so important.  The music.  The tv.  The conversations. The self-talk. They either lift you up and lead you closer to Christ, or they drag you down and further away.

Podcasts have become such a wonderful way for me to fill my mind with God’s truths.  Now that I have a smart phone, I load up my favorite sermons and turn them on in the morning while I am getting ready for the day.

Hope in a Broken World

My husband found me in the closet on the floor—crying.  It is not uncommon…really…if I am honest.  I can be dramatic.  This night I was spent.  One too many things had went wrong with the day.

He walked in.  And then he walked out.  Then he walked in and sat beside me in silence.(So thankful he loves me.)

Finally I said, “Everything is broken.”

What I Am Listening To {Issue 3: The Biblical Stucture of the Family}

I have really been intrigued by the debate stirred up by Candace Cameron Bure’s (yes…D.J. Tanner from Full House) comments about submission in her new book Balancing It All.  I have not read the book, but I agree with her views on marriage that has stirred all the buzz in the media about women’s rights.

What I Am Listening To {Issue2: The Word}

One of my favorite things to do on a Sunday afternoon as my family is resting is to load up some podcasts, get plugged-in, and work in the kitchen.  I will cut up the fruits and veggies for the week and prepare a casserole or stew that we will eat both Sunday and Monday night.

I listen to a variety of pastors, bloggers, and worship leaders from various denominations. I seem to get stuck on a theme when I search for different sermons. My theme lately has been “The Word”.

Check these out!

What I Am Listening To {Issue1: Community}

Sweet Friend,

I have seen you at Wal-Mart, in the drop-off line at school, at the pediatrician office, at playdates, working on homework with your kids, making a meal for a sick friend, and folding clothes late at night.  You are constantly pouring yourself out into the lives of your family and friends.  You give of yourself at church, at work, and at home.

All that pouring out…aren’t you empty?
