Top 6 Hiking Trails in Northwest Arkansas

Growing up in rural Arkansas, I spent a good amount of time hiking through the woods around my home with my Dad.  He taught me to respect the land and how to read the various signs of nature.  He taught me to recognize different plants, trees, and animals.  When I moved to Northwest Arkansas, I got sucked into enjoying the commercial amenities that this more urban setting offered.

As my kids came along, it became very apparent how little their knowledge of nature was.  They were afraid of all insects!  So my husband and I made an intentional effort to combat this by taking regular nature hikes as a family.  Some are day long planned events while others are impromptu diversions meant to burn off some energy.

Reflections from #AWBU

Last weekend I attended #AWBU which my first blogging conference.  I have been a member of Arkansas Women Bloggers dating back to my time with Mosaic of Moms.  This was my first time to meet a lot of these women in real life.  Some have been a part of my blogging community from the beginning.  What joy it was to hug the necks of so many of these women who have been just thumbnail pics for years.

Just about every weekend someone e-mails me asking about tips for local day trips.  So I decided to start blogging about those ideas. I have been working all summer to blog about just a few of the attractions we have available in Northwest Arkansas.  As the blog grows, I will continue to add to this category to help you explore NWA to the fullest.

Rogers Historical Museum: NWA Day Trip

A few weeks ago, I needed a free activity to keep my kids busy for an hour or so between errands.  We dropped-in at the Rogers Historical Museum.  This museum is fantastic for historians of all ages.

My kids had so much fun with all the hands-on activities.  A room called “The Attic” was set up as a turn of the century home.  The kids got to play house.  They explored kitchen appliances and common household tools.  It was entertaining for me to watch them infer the uses of these tools.

Anniversary Getaway to Eureka Springs, AR

Our favorite destination for a quick getaway without the kids is Eureka Springs, AR. About every six to eight weeks, we head over for a day trip as a family, but it is so much fun to stay a few days just the two of us.  This month we are celebrating nine years of marriage.  We will be heading over to a cabin in the woods just outside of Eureka for our anniversary trip.

Har-Ber Village Day Trip: Grove, OK

Harvey Jones was an important businessman in the state of Arkansas.  He started a delivery business with a mule team and a wagon when he was 18 years-old, and over the course of a lifetime built the largest trucking company in the country, The Jones Truck Line.  He and his wife, Bernice, were community minded and loved supporting children and young families.

Crystal Bridges: NWA Day Trip

We are fortunate in Northwest Arkansas to have so many great attractions.  One of the most unique is the Crystal Bridges Art Museum.  Nestled in the woods just north of the Bentonville city square is a mecca for art enthusiasts.  Last time I visited, Harrison Ford was there.  WHAT??!!!?

Aside from the amazing collection of art on exhitbit, my favorite aspect of this experience is enjoying the shear beauty of the architecture.  There is just too much to take in on one visit!

Devil’s Den State Park: NWA Day Trip

Last weekend the weather was absolutely perfect! When we woke up on Saturday, we packed a cooler and a picnic lunch and headed out on a day trip to Devil’s Den State Park. We hiked the Devil’s Den trail. The last time we took this particular trail our son was in a backpack carrier. Even though he is only 3 and 1/2, he is extremely athletic. He loved this 1.5 mile trail through the Ozark Mountains.

A Story Worth Telling: Hardy, AR

There is a reality show on Discovery called Clash of the Ozarks. Have you seen it? It is about two feuding families in a small town in north central Arkansas called Hardy. This happens to be my hometown. Well, I am technically from the next town over, but everybody knows everybody in Sharp County. My family has been in that area as long as the Russells and the Evanses.

NWA Day Trip Spring Break 2014

We took an impromptu day trip to Eureka Springs last weekend.  It is our number one day trip destination.  I remember the first time my husband and I decided to drive over together.  I remember the exact place we were sitting that night when I realized that I was in love with him.  We got married there a few months later.

Every trip we take to Eureka is different and we stop in different places on the way.  This trip had two phases.
